Gordian III, Aureus, Rome, AD 240, MS(65-70), Gold, RIC:129a (denarius)
laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right
Salus standing right, holding patera and feeding serpent in arms
IMP GORDIANVS PIVS FEL AVG
SALVS AVGVSTI
Many of Gordian III’s issues were struck using the same types in différent metals. It is normal to find sometimes an unpublished denomination but for a well-known type. It is the case for our example, missing from the standard references consulted and missing from the British Museum collection. This aureus is of the same type that the denarius with Salus standing right, of the 7th emission. Extremely rare aureus, virtually as struck, with full mint luster and its original sharpness
